It is that time again….to start the Herbal Classes! Here is the schedule of all classes to be given by Vicki L. Vosburg, Master Herbalist. Come and learn about the wide world of herbs and how we can make them work for us! Sip some tea, take some notes, join in making some of the herbal preparations. We’ll have a great time! All classes must be pre-paid, so hurry and secure your reservations. These classes will be held at “The Herb Pantry” located at 851 S. Curtis Rd., approximately 2 ½ blocks north of Overland. Confusing? Don’t let that get you down, just call Vicki or Laura at 433-1882 and we will give you exact directions so that there is no question about where you go to have this much fun and learn about herbs too. All classes will be held on Saturday mornings starting at 9:00am. Some classes will end at 11:00am and others will end at 12:00pm, so be sure and check what class you are interested in.
Herbal teas and water will be available for you. All classes have hand-outs with information on the subject at hand and recipes, if applicable. Vicki, the Master Herbalist, will be giving information on Western herbs and their interaction with the body. Please bring paper and pen or pencil for note taking.
Note: This herbal medicine should only be taken under the supervision of a trained, credentialed herbalist. These classes are not designed to diagnose conditions nor to prescribe medicines, but rather to inform students of the possibilities herbs offer to help the body heal itself.
Culinary / Medicinal Crossover

Many of the culinary herbs that you use in your every day cooking can also be used for medicinal purposes. They can be used for mild nervous disorders, digestion, ulcers, and many other ailments as we will find in the information that is given in this class. It is a wonderful thing when you can grow one plant and it can be used for many different things necessary to our every day life.
Additional to this class we will go over the Herbal Category of Emmenagogues. These herbs can treat injuries, heart disease, pain caused by blood clots and tumors and cancer, as well as gynecological disorders.
First-Aid / Survival

We must prepare for economic and political disasters as well as natural disasters, such as earthquakes, floods and famines, or we won’t be counted as wise as the animals. If we stop and listen to the inner self (the spirit that moves in all things) it will tell us how to be prepared. This class will help you figure out what it is you need to concentrate on to b prepared or to help our family be prepared.
Along with this class we will discuss the Herbal Category of Hemostatics. This category of herbs is used to inhibit bleeding, including nose bleeds, coughing up blood, blood in the urine and stool, bleeding from trauma and childbirth.
Aspartame (Sugar substitute)

There are over 92 different health side effects associated with aspartame consumption. It seems surreal, but true. How can one chemical create such chaos? The multitude of aspartame side effects is indicative to your genetic individuality and physical weaknesses. It is important to put two and two together, and identify which side effects aspartame is creating with you.
The Herbal Category we will be discussing after the main subject is Expectorant & Anti-Tussive Herbs (Herbs for Dissolving Phlegm and Relieving Cough) there are two groups to this category of herbs. One is expectorant or phlegm-dissolving herbs and the second is the anti-tussive or cough relieving herbs.
Stress Management

As the pace of modern life continues to speed up, and we are exposed to toxins in the air, water, ad food that sustain us, many people feel increasingly stressed. This stress takes its toll on our health, back and neck pain, and digestive disturbances can be caused or worsened by stress. Emotionally, stress can cause anxiety, depression, and other unhealthy states. Herbal medicine offers effective, safe remedies for these ailments and of the stress that underlies them. This class will present herbal strategies for managing stress and for preventing or treating its possible effect.
With this class we will go over the Herbal Category on Stimulants. Herbal stimulants are used to raise the general vitality of the body.
Natural Body Care / Herbal Eye & Hair Care / Tooth Powders & Facial Toners

Herbs are uniquely suited to the care and nourishment of beautiful skin, lustrous hair, sparkling eyes, and strong nails. Herbs are primary sources of organic minerals and trace minerals, the building blocks of our “cosmetic elements”. They are rich in food-source vitamins and concentrated food nutrients and are quickly capable of becoming part of the body to stimulate cleansing, encourage healthy cell growth, and build tissue strength.
Hormonal Balancing

Herbal remedies and dietary changes can safely treat symptoms of hormonal imbalances, without side effects. Many symptoms related to under- or over- active thyroid function can be treated with herbs.
Premenstrual symptoms can also be treated with herbal medicine: cramping, mood swings, bloating, and fatigue can all be managed with herbs. Menopause symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia and poor memory also respond well to herbal remedies, which treat both the symptoms and their underlying causes.
Along with this class we will be going over the Herbal Category of Sedative / Nervines. The Chinese medicine has two classes of sedatives. The first is stronger sedatives, or tranquilizers. The second consists of mild sedative herbs. And Western herbal medicine has “nerviness” which falls between the two categories above.
Herbal Tonics for Chronic Ailments

For chronic symptoms that drag on and on or come and go, a different set of herbs are appropriate – the tonics. Learn about the stimulating tonics and the nourishing tonics, when to use them and for what ailments.
With this class we will discuss the Herbal Category of Aromatic Stomachic’s. This category treats digestive disturbances associated with phlegm and fluid congestion in the abdomen.
Herbal Oils and Salves

No matter how good that commercial salve is, none will compare with the herbal salves you make quickly and inexpensively at home. We will start with making oils, which is the precursor to herbal salves. Then continue on to making salves. We will make a few different kinds so that you can take home a small container of each one made. All product and containers will be provided.
Making Tinctures

Tinctures are a fluid extract of a plant. The use of this form of herbal medicine is the fastest way to get an herb into the body…..under the tongue; it goes directly into the bloodstream. And for some ailments that is exactly what we need! Learn how to make Tinctures to put into your own medicine cabinet. We will be making an alcohol based tincture and a glycerin based tincture. You will need to bring two 1 gallon clear glass jars and all other items will be provided.
